Contemporary Violins & Bows was born as a group last year to organize an exhibition of violins, violas, cellos and bows in September. It is a group of professional violin makers who live and work in Cremona and share a similar vision of the violin maker's work ethic, even though they also come from different schools or experiences. The 2019 initiative was organized way in advance of the dates of execution; at the beginning of 2020 Roberto Cavagnoli, one of last year's participants, began to probe the intentions of others who were mostly of the opinion of repeating the experience. The pandemic has overturned all programs and brought about a setback.

Despite the general uncertainty, in the end the decision was to "be there" anyway, although in a different way, even compared to other initiatives promoted by Institutions and Associations. Therefore the proposal made to those who had expressed their intention to participate in the "real" exhibition was to present themselves with a video that is not conceived as a "virtual exhibition" but as a real "film" featuring contemporary luthiers who will find themselves making unusual encounters with characters who have made a long journey ( "a virtual one" given the problems that still remain for "real" travels) just to meet those who, today, with the same seriousness, professionalism and passion of the past, produce stringed instruments which, after leaving Cremona, reach almost every part of the world.

To distinguish the 2020 edition, we decided to replace the term "Exhibition" from last year with "Sound & Vision 2020" because, aware that nothing can replace the "live" performance of a violin, we have opted for a presentation that goes beyond the photo gallery or the simple information sheet of the luthier and focuses on images and sounds, without the participation of the "word" where it is not strictly necessary.

Obviously there will be all the useful references to contact the individual luthiers, from the site to the social networks till the direct visit to the workshop, for those in Cremona. It was decided to "twist" the classical vision a bit, just as the pandemic has upset our lives, and to use this "pause" to present ourselves with a video that aims to be an ideal link between the past and the future edition of Contemporary Violins & Bows. Contemporary Violins & Bows nasce come gruppo lo scorso anno per organizzare un’esposizione di strumenti ad arco ed archi nel mese di settembre. Si tratta di un gruppo di liutai professionisti che vive e lavora a Cremona ed è accomunato da una visione simile del lavoro di liutaio, pur venendo anche da scuole o esperienze differenti. L’iniziativa del 2019 è stata organizzata con parecchio anticipo sulle date di svolgimento; a inizio 2020 Roberto Cavagnoli, uno dei partecipanti dello scorso anno, ha iniziato a sondare le intenzioni degli altri che erano per la maggior parte del parere di ripetere l’esperienza. La pandemia ha stravolto tutti programmi e ha imposto una battuta d’arresto. Pur nell’incertezza generale, alla fine la decisione è stata quella di “esserci” comunque, anche se in modo diverso, anche rispetto ad altre iniziative promosse da Enti e Associazioni. Perciò la proposta fatta a chi aveva espresso intenzione di partecipare all’esposizione “vera” è stata quella di presentarsi con un video che non è pensato come una “mostra virtuale” ma come un vero e proprio “film” che vede protagonisti i liutai contemporanei che si troveranno a fare incontri insoliti con personaggi che hanno fatto un lungo viaggio (quello sì “virtuale”, visto i problemi che tuttora rimangono per i viaggi “reali”) proprio per incontrare chi, oggi, con la stessa serietà, professionalità e passione di un tempo, produce strumenti ad arco che, partendo da Cremona, arrivano quasi in ogni parte del Mondo. Per distinguere l’edizione 2020 è stato scelto di sostituire il termine “Exhibition” dello scorso anno con “Sound&Vision 2020” perché, consapevoli che niente può sostituire la prova “dal vivo” di un violino, si è optato per una presentazione che va oltre la galleria fotografica o la semplice scheda informativa del liutaio e punta tutto su immagini e suoni, senza interventi della “parola” che non siano strettamente necessari. Ovviamente ci saranno tutti i riferimenti utili per contattare i singoli liutai, dal sito ai social alla visita diretta in laboratorio, per chi fosse a Cremona. Si è pensato di “stravolgere” un po’ la visione classica, così come la pandemia ha sconvolto le nostre vite, e di usare questo “intervallo” per proporsi con un video che vuole essere un collegamento ideale tra la passata e la futura edizione di Contemporary Violins & Bows.
